Warning and Barricade Light Variations:
Light Type | Use | Description | Application |
Type A | Low-intensity, flashing, typically has 2 lit sides. | Nighttime | Used for warning of hazards at night. They should not be used for guiding traffic since the off/on flashing could be confusing. They are not as visible during the day and may even be off during daylight hours. |
Type B | High-intensity, flashing, typically has a hood and faces only one direction so all the light energy is focused in one direction. | 24-hour | Used to warn road users during both daylight and nighttime hours. |
Type C | Low-intensity, steady burn, typically has 2 lit sides. | Nighttime | Can be used at night to delineate the edge of a roadway and to help guide drivers since they have a constant light. When used to delineate a curve, Type C lights must be used on the outside of the curve, and not on the inside of the curve. |
Type D | 360° steady-burn lights. | Nighttime | Applications where steady-burn light needs to be seen from all sides, such as airports. When used to delineate a curve, Type D lights must be used on the outside of the curve, and not on the inside of the curve. |
