Windsocks are also sometimes located alongside highways at windy locations. At many airports, windsocks are lit at night, either by floodlights on top surrounding it or with one mounted on the pole shining inside it. Wind direction is the opposite of the direction in which the windsock is pointing Wind speed is indicated by the windsock's angle relative to the mounting pole; in low winds, the windsock droops; in high winds it flies horizontally.

A 400 lbs. tensile strength webbing is added in the throat for reinforcement, and the brass grommets are evenly spaced, allowing for the standard lace-on or tie wrap method of attachment. Tie wraps (included) are used to secure the mouth of the windsock to its metal swivel frame or basket (not included)..
